I rediscovered the Spanish impressionist painter Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) during a dedicated exhibition at the National Gallery in London in 2019. Known as the Master of light, his bather scenes, family portraits and garden views are radiant.

I purchased this book called “Sorolla y el Mar” dedicated to his seascapes. This is not a very thick one and there is a simple feel to it, but the pictures are beautiful and I just keep coming back to look at it again and again.

Sorolla is a true impressionist painter who used to paint in "plein air" with his easel directly on the beach to capture ever-changing effects of light. On Sorolla’s canvases you are blinded by the Mediterranean sun glaring on the waves, can feel the heat radiate deeply in your skin, only to be relieved at the surface by a fresh salted breeze.

As one of the most celebrated painter in Spain, Sorolla has a museum in Madrid which was his family house and studio. The atmosphere of the house filled with art and the lush garden seems incredible. We will go one day for sure, and probably in the not too distant future...
